Type or Prefigurement of Christ, Melchizadek was an Old Testament Prophet, King, and Priest who offered a bloodless thanksgiving sacrifice of bread and wine as a peace offering and reconciliation after war. He mysteriously appeared after war in a climate of peace. They did not know where he came from or where he went. He had no beginning and no end. The Fathers of the Church see him as an Image of Christ Whom Christ fulfilled in the New Testament when He Himself instituted the Bloodless Sacrifice of Bread and Wine at the Eucharist. Christ fulfilled the prophecy that He was “a Priest forever after the Order of Melchizadek.” Made of intricate mosaics, his Icon will be shown as a crowned Priest holding bread and wine over a marble table.
